There’s so much to learn from Lincoln that I could post about him till 2011 (don’t worry, I won’t). But here are a few more points about his character that I relate to fitness:
- Lincoln was honest. I try to be that way, too. I think it’s deceptive to tell people that a fitness plan or product makes getting—and staying—fit easy. It’s tough. But it’s not as tough as a lifetime of obesity. And the Ultimate Fitness Game (UFG) can make it fun, too!
- Lincoln was financially responsible. When he was president, the national debt was paid off. I don’t like having personal debts, and that includes nutritional debts. Now that I’ve reached my weight goal, I know that I can have a little of anything I want to eat, as long as I have enough UFG dollars to pay for it. But just like it’s irresponsible to buy a new videogame when I haven’t paid my car payment, it would be irresponsible for me to eat a cupcake or candy bar if I hadn’t “bought” all the fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other important parts of a healthy diet. By the time I buy all the foods I need, I rarely have money for extras.
- Lincoln was athletic and strong, but most of his exercise came from working outdoors, including splitting wood. I’ve found that I can use work as exercise, too. I actually like to clean my room—and even the entire house—now that I look at it as exercise. I use muscles cleaning that I don’t use when working out at the gym. Lincoln set the example for honest hard work.
Until next time, here’s something to think about:
The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.—Abraham Lincoln
